Happy Thanksgiving To All!

Hello again! I would like to thank all the parents who attended the parent teacher conferences. You know your child best! I learn more about and can better serve your child when I am able to meet with you to talk about your child's goals and needs. We had a very good turnout and a few behavioral mysteries were solved! It is so important to keep in touch! Feel free to write to me (via the students parent communication book ) or call me (212-579-3788 Ext. 3050 ) at any time! As a reminder, I hope to see you all at the P811M Day of Thanks Celebration on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 11:30 This joyful community gathering has become a meaningful tradition for all who take part!

This month's themes focus onThanksgiving, turkeys and Fall. Our bulletin board display includes information that the children share about how they celebrate Thanksgiving, such as, where they go, what their favorite food is and what they are thankful for. At first, students just circled their choices among the offered responses. Later, the students trace and write their favorite page from the "My Thanksgiving" booklet. Also, the students got to make a cute turkey headbands and pretended to be turkeys! What great pictures we took! I will be sure to send copies home!

Next month we will be starting our holiday and winter lessons - Can't believe it is almost time for December break!

Oh, And I would like to give a quick thank you for all the kind comments posted to this, my very first blog! Thanks for the encouragement!

Welcome To My Class!

Hi! Welcome!

This blog is to be used to post the events and happenings of Classroom 305 of The Mickey Mantle School in New York City. A place where teachers, students and parents can communicate!

Let me introduce myself - I am Ms. Jean, Special Education Teacher. I teach K-2 students with autism in a self-contained 6:1:1 class . Students work on their goals: reading, writing, math, social skills, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, communication skills and also practice our ADL's. (Activities of Daily Living) Students have begun to adjust to the new school year and have adapted well to classroom and school routines.

In September we followed the cross curriculum thematic units "Back to School" and "Apples". We read fiction and nonfiction books about school and apple related topics. We learned important school and apple vocabulary. And we made school and apple related artwork and other literacy projects. Our hallway bulletin board proudly displayed student writing that told of our favorite class in school and why it was our favorite. It also showed our "Favorite Teacher Frames". These frames were made on silver mirrored oak tag and were covered in school related die-cut shapes by each student. Centered in each frame was a lovely shot of each child with their favorite teacher!



Plans for October include following thematic units "Pumpkins" and "Halloween". Have fun with your child when selecting a safe (no mask and fire proof) costume! Instead of carving a pumpkin with your child, why not let them paint a scary face on one? Templates for this are available in stores and online or you can make one yourself.
